چکیده

An audit has been performed of the value of parathyroid hormone assays and thallium-technetium isotope scanning in the pre-operative investigation of 67 hypercalcaemic patients referred for surgery over a 5 year period. Parathyroid hormone assay by region-specific technique was found to have a diagnostic sensitivity of75% (n = 52) whilst the more recent assay for the intact molecule was 97% sensitive (n = 34). Thallium-technetium isotope scanning was only 64% sensitive overall (n = 59), due in part to the small size ofadenomata now being referred for surgery. This study confirms the role ofthe intact parathyroid hormone assay but questions that ofthallium-technetium isotope scanning in standard protocols of investigation for hypercalcaemia.

Sensitivity and specificity of thallium-technetium subtraction scan in localization of the parathyroid adenoma [Persian]

Thirty one patients with biologic and clinical diagnosis of hyperparathyroidism were submitted to thalium-technetium scan prior to exploration of the neck. Scan findings were compared with the pathologic results. Surgical exploration of the neck showed a parathyroid adenoma in 24 patients, parathyroid carcinoma in one patient, normal parathyroid in another patient and parathyroid hyperplasia in...

Radionuclide techniques in the diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism. The role of technetium 99m--thallium 201 subtraction scanning.

The role of various radionuclide investigations, including parathyroid scintigraphy, bone scintigraphy and serum parathormone estimations in the diagnosis of primary hyperparathyroidism is reviewed briefly. The initial experience with the dual isotope (Tl-201; Tc-99m) subtraction scintigraphy for the preoperative localization of parathyroid adenomas is presented (JPMA 37 : 237, 1987).

A clinical audit of thallium-technetium subtraction parathyroid scans.

Eighty six consecutive thallium-technetium subtraction parathyroid scans performed over a three year period for hypercalcaemia have been evaluated. Twelve had chronic renal failure, 11 had hypercalcaemia due to non-hyperparathyroid causes and in 10 the imaging study was technically inadequate. The remaining 53 technically adequate studies performed for hypercalcaemia clinically thought to be po...
